Invade "Man's World"_U. of Washington!
by Ann Satero, Rho
The University of Washington DAILY has
been a man's world since its beginning in
1854! Recently however, it was invaded by
women and two of them are members of
Rho chapter of Alpha Chi Omega.
Sharon Lee Carey served as associate editor
during the 1956-57 school year and Virginia
Whitehead will fill the same spot starting in
1958 for the second half of the school year.
They are two of only six women editors in
100 years!
Their position is second spot on the news-
paper which has a circulation of 17,000. The
two were elected by their fellow journalism
classmates. The job takes an average of 10
hours a day.

From the very beginning with our seven Founders, Alpha Chi Omega women were breaking barriers. The September
1957 issue of The Lyre spotlighted two Rho (University of Washington) sisters who held editor positions on the campus
newspaper - just two of six female editors in the newspaper's 100-year history at the time! Two more trailblazing journalists
are highlighted this issue starting on page 46, along with many other sisters pushing the limits and being true to themselves.

The Power and Control Wheel
The Power and Control Wheel helps us understand more accurately what can occur in an abusive
relationship. The outer ring represents physical, visible violence while the inside of the wheel is
comprised of subtle, continual behaviors. By recognizing the pattern of behaviors in an abusive
relationship, we as Alpha Chi Omegas can better understand why a victim can't "just leave" and
discover more ways to advocate for an end to domestic violence.

Housing
Who Runs the Housing World?
Real, Strong Women.
By Eliza Payne (Delta Chi, William Woods University), Housing Operations Coordinator
The housing industry is often viewed as a male-dominated field, with few women at the top. One alumna,
Michelle Merrick (Epsilon Xi, University of Nevada, Reno), is shaking up that view and paving the way for other
women to find success in the field. Merrick is the plan manager for KB Home and a long-time Alpha Chi
Omega volunteer, currently serving as chapter advisor for lota Xi (University of California, Riverside), president of
Kappa Tau Kappa (Las Vegas, Nevada) and a member of the Foundation's Scholarship Committee. She shares
her insight into the housing and construction world.

selling jewelry for financial freedom, an important part of
life after divorce. They may need funds to pay off debts or
cover relocation costs.
Plus, divorced women need to take time to care for
themselves. Funds can be used to treat themselves to a

suggests making a gift to a charity or foundation, like the

And she continues to prove people wrong every day.
From her seat in her wheelchair, Prehn uses her positive
outlook as a motivator for herself and for others as she
pursues her path to the medical field.
A LIFE-CHANGING INSTANT
In November 2006, when Prehn was 11 years old, she
was heading home on Highway 6 outside of San Antonio,
Texas. In an instant, the car she was in was spinning,
struck head-on by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel
going 75 miles per hour. As the car spun around, the
truck behind collided with the passenger side where
Prehn was sitting.
Prehn was rushed to the hospital. Along with
puncturing both lungs and sustaining multiple internal
injuries, Prehn broke her back and suffered a spinal cord
injury that paralyzed her from the waist down.
What followed was two months in the intensive care
unit followed by another two months of inpatient rehab.
An active gymnast and soccer player, Prehn now had to
focus on reacquiring simple movement skills.
"I was working on a new way of life, from bathing to
dressing myself, pretty much relearning everything," she
explains.
After her time in the hospital, Prehn returned home and
committed herself to recovery, continuing with outpatient
rehab throughout middle school and high school in her
hometown of Austin. When she made her college decision

Alpha Chi Omega
FOUNDATION
"
Philanthropy is very important to my chapter. It gives us an
opportunity to be more than just another student organization. Through the
Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, we're able to impact the lives of so many people.
Supporting the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation
is just as important as supporting our local
philanthropy because it allows us to pay it
forward to the sisterhood that has provided
us with lifelong friendships and has given us
numerous opportunities to develop into
real, strong women. "
- Tess Elfred (Kappa Chi, Florida Gulf Coast University)
