This trailblazing sister combined her love of Alpha Chi Omega
and her business to make an impact in her community.
By Courtney Servaes (Omicron, Baker University)
The first time Madison Mater and I
met, she was interviewing for a position at
my brewery, Servaes Brewing Company,
which had recently opened in Shawnee,
Kansas. It became clear early on that
Madison and I had several things in
common - craft beer, Baker University
and Alpha Chi Omega. Madison quickly
became an integral part of our brewery
family.
The brewery opened April 20, 2019,
making me the first female head brewer

a woman in the beer industry can be
a challenge, and I knew it would be.

DONTHAZE
2020 is a convention year, and for alumnae chapters,
that also means alumnae chapter awards! We love
celebrating our alumnae chapters and the members
working SO hard for their success. This year, the lifetime
engagement department has created a new resource
to help alumnae chapters apply for awards.
We know that our alumnae chapters are doing
great things to celebrate sisterhood, support their
communities and connect sisters across the country. It
is our hope that every alumnae chapter will apply for at
least one alumnae chapter award.

Collegian Opportunity: Convention Pages
Interested in a backstage pass to convention? Serving as a convention page is a fun and exciting
opportunity available exclusively to collegiate members. As a convention page, you will meet, work and
network with alumnae, other collegians, staff and board members from across the country. You'll also work
behind the scenes with event and meeting preparations, help during the election process and assist with a
number of other convention activities.
"Serving as a convention page was one of my favorite experiences
from my collegiate career," says 2018 page Allie Cantalupo
(Kappa Chi, Florida Gulf Coast University). "Being able
to work closely with the headquarters staff and
meet sisters from around the country was a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Our Beta chapter sisters at Albion College in Albion,
Michigan have a unique housing experience in that the
members have a facility, but they do not live there. This is
the norm on Albion's campus, and the facility is commonly
referred to as a lodge.
Chapter President Paige Mellema describes Beta's lodge as
sophisticated yet homey and always full of members. The area
you're most likely to find members occupying is the basement,
which Mellema says provides a "great environment for sisters
to bond, have movie nights and study during the cold winter
months."
Having the lodge as a designated
place just for Alpha Chi Omega sisters
is particularly helpful when the library
and academic buildings are full during
finals. The Beta lodge provides a safe
space for members to connect and
create memories. Baking cookies in the
two kitchens in the facility is a favorite

OF ALPHA CHI OMEGA
To see beauty even in the common things of life,
to shed the light of love and friendship round me;
to keep my life in tune with the world
that I shall make no discords in the harmony of life;
to strike on the lyre of the universe
only the notes of happiness, of joy, of peace;
to appreciate every little service rendered;
to see and appreciate all that is noble in another,

and to let my lyre send forth the chords of love,
unselfishness, sincerity.

to make it a better place."
An Expedition of a Lifetime
Jump was one of 95 women selected to participate in the
Homeward Bound program. Representing 33 countries and
a wide range of STEM (science, technology, engineering and
math) backgrounds, these women made up the fourth cohort

the Antarctic expedition, each woman gave a presentation to
share just a bit of her passion and area of study; Jump focused
hers on the Everglades. (More on her connection to this part
of nature later!)
Meeting her cohort members in person after months of
virtual sessions was, according to jump, "just like an initial
meeting with one's Alpha Chi pledge class!"
She adds, "In many ways our stories are the same, no
matter where we come from, our diverse backgrounds,
the wide range of STEM fields, our advanced degrees, our
ages. We are committed to sustaining our planet, and we're
passionate about leveraging our global Homeward Bound
leadership experience to make a difference together!"
But even with all the accomplishments and accolades that
each woman holds, Jump noted that in the months leading
up to the expedition, there was a general sentiment among
women that they were shocked to have been chosen for the
program.
"Women have these doubts about themselves that men
often don't have," she explained. "We've learned that the
world needs us to rise, every single one of us. Even when
you're 67 years old. I still have a lot to learn and give."
And though women are now pushing their way into
STEM fields, Jump would give this advice to Alpha Chi
sisters looking to make a change for the planet:
"I would say, 'Sister, step up, we need you," she shared.
"We each stand on the shoulders of those before us. There
were Alpha Chis that lifted me up, and Alpha Chis that lifted
the generation before them up."
And for the wider lens of women's empowerment, Jump

"Look at our Founders; look at what they did," she said.
"Here's to sisters changing the world!" Jump proclaimed

Chapter Today
By Grace Andersen
Football at Iowa is a different kind of school
pride. When you live in a rural state with no pro
football team in sight, the entire state relies on two
college football teams (University of Iowa and Iowa
State University, home of the Delta Nu chapter) for
their weekend sports, and in turn, give us one of the
best fan bases in the nation.
Football season for us at Sigma is not just a
pasttime, it's a bonding time. My sister Abbie
Berryhill and I (pictured on the bottom right of
this page) have been together for just about every
football game in Kinnick Stadium since we started
at this great university. We have stormed Kinnick
field together (twice), and we've rode home in near
silence from a devastating loss. It's never a dull
moment as a Hawkeye fan.
Abbie's and my senior commitment to each other
was that we would go to every game the Hawkeyes
play, home and away, and so far SO good. Our
lifetime goal is to watch the Hawks play at every Big
Ten campus.
I think what really makes Iowa different than
other college fan bases is that we stick with the team
through thick and thin. More Hawkeye fans do the
Big Ten tour than any other fan base, and I think
I speak for them all when I say it's a no-brainer,
following your team across the Midwest during a
season. The Hawks have broken our hearts a few
times but have always gone out and played harder
the next. There are no fair-weather fans of Hawkeye
football. There are only those who call it the
Hawkeye State and believe it.
