REAL. STRONG. WOMEN.
Passion for Giving
OUR SISTERS HAVE ALWAYS GIVEN TO CAUSES THAT
MEAN THE MOST TO THEM.
T
throughout our 136 years, Alpha Chi Omega has
directed our national philanthropic focus to
several causes, from Star Studio at MacDowell to
cerebral palsy and support of the Easterseals, all the way
to today's commitment to domestic violence awareness
and healthy relationships. Our collective action as sisters
has made an immeasurable difference.
Beyond our national altruisms, service and philanthropy
are core tenants of the Real. Strong. Women. Experience.
In Alpha Chi Omega, members find a place where they
can chase their passions and develop their hearts for
giving - all while being supported by their sisters.
The Real. Strong. Women. Experience gives members
the confidence, skills and support to lead the way for
the causes that mean the most to them and to meet
the needs of the time. In 1944 when mothers were
working essential war jobs and fathers were in service,
Alpha Chi Omega co-organized the first federal childcare
center under the Lanham Act, providing education and
supervision of children six days a week. After Hurricane
Katrina devastated the southeastern United States in
2005, sisters across the country raised funds and collected
donations to support relief efforts.
As champions of change, our members are making
a positive impact on their campuses and in their
communities. 136 years and more than 300,000 initiated
members - just think of how much good Alpha Chi

officers a better sense of their roles and responsibilities
and inspired conversation on inclusive leadership,

empathetic (even when it's hard). Sisters concluded the
weekend with action planning, a panel discussion with
members of Alpha Chi Omega's National Council and a
closing keynote from Krystal N. Clark.
Overall, the weekend was packed with leadership

I knew I had found a forever sisterhood.
I am very blessed to share my love for Alpha Chi with
my daughters, Madison and Morgan, now on a sister

and my mom - and they now see that they will have
a forever sisterhood, too. It was my goal as they made
the decision to go through recruitment that this would

he past two years have seen people all over
the world grappling with COVID-19, its
variants and its lingering effects still today.
The pandemic has left many to take a closer look at
their priorities and identify ways to find more balance
in their lives - and ways to focus on what is really
important.
As collegiate chapters across the country have had to
find new ways to hold chapter meetings, ceremonies
and initiation, we have all been called to reflect on
the things that really matter and what really makes
Alpha Chi Omega special to SO many. Is it the brick-and-
mortar homes we occupy? Is it the ceremony regalia
we wear or the traditions and events our chapters hold
every year? Of course, we know those things are of
great importance, but without the Ritual of Alpha Chi
Omega, without the commitments we make to each
other as sisters every time we are together (virtually or
otherwise), those things matter very little.
I have found myself constantly returning to thoughts

of our Founders over the last several months. In 1885,
Alpha Chi Omega was founded to create space for
women that did not exist before. During a time when
women's organizations like ours were in their infancy,

"If there's one word that would be my superpower, that
would describe me, it's "authenticity," she says of the start of our tagline.
"You can't be something different to different people. You need to be
real and grounded."
As for the second word - strong - Monica shares, "I go back to being
determined, fearless, fiery. I've been called 'feisty' a few times. It's
fighting for what's right and fair."
These themes will serve Monica well as she begins the top job in
Broward County this month, having recently been appointed the
county administrator. Managing a team of nearly 7,000 employees and a
budget of $6.7 billion, she'll continue to lead authentically and focus on

Aside from a brief stint in the private

professional career in public service.
After earning her master's degree in
public administration, Monica went
to work for the city of Tallahassee
in Florida, with roles in the City
Manager's Office and the Office of
Management and Budget. It was in
her first job with the city that she
received important advice from one
of the very best sources: her mom.
"My mom wrote on a piece of paper,
'There are no mistakes in life, only
lessons' and she mailed it to me,"
Monica recalls. "I've got SO many
pinholes in that little paper because
in every job I've had, I pin it to the
bulletin board in my office. And that's
how I lead, too .There are always
going to be mistakes, and if there
aren't, you're not taking enough risks."
Monica later transitioned to state
government, working under then-
Governor Jeb Bush. After several years
in a local government liaison role and
doing financial analysis, the governor
asked her to be his environmental
policy advisor, taking on issues that
ranged from the Everglades to water
management. Monica planned to

"That gave me SO much courage. I feel SO blessed to

And Monica also gets to share Alpha Chi Omega
with her biological family! The daughter of Cuban
immigrants, Monica was able to have the "normal"
teenage and young adult life that her parents could
not; for her, that included going to college after high
