Bus to DePauw Day, 1985 National Convention

The 1985 National Convention was the 100-year celebration for Alpha Chi Omega. The five days were packed with activities, including a special DePauw Day, where attendees packed onto buses in groups and made their way to Greencastle, Indiana, for a tour of campus, a pageant of our founding, a concert by the Founders' Memorial and presentation by National President D'Alice Cochran.

Marguerite Graham (Omicron, Baker University) joined the American Red Cross in 1943 and served in Australia and New Guinea. Before leaving for service, she stopped by the Alpha Chi Omega national meeting in Chicago and shared, "I am in for the duration and expect to travel far and wide before I return."

Marguerite Graham McWhirter (Omicron, Baker University) is pictured in her Lyre tribute from 1989. Marguerite dedicated her life to Alpha Chi Omega and upon her death in 1988 left the organization a gift estimated over $350,000. She served as a finance specialist to a wholesale company in Chicago until 1944, when she joined the American Red Cross. She was a very active alumna in Illinois, serving as president and treasurer of Alpha Alpha (Chicago, Illinois). Nationally for Alpha Chi Omega, she served as convention transportation manager and chair of the National Nominating Committee.

Jeannie Patterson Baliles (Beta Pi, Washington College) is the founder and chairman of the Virginia Literary Foundation and served as the chairman of the Virginia Opera. She has served as a trustee on the Virginia Environmental Endowment, the Community Foundation of Central Virginia and the Jenkins Foundation. She has also served on the board of Wolf Trap, the Nature Conservancy, the Jamestown-Yorktown Trust, YMCA, the Historic Richmond Foundation, and on the Board of Trustees of Virginia Union University. She is the former wife of Gerald L. Baliles, the 65th Governor of Virginia, and served as First Lady of Virginia from 1986-90.
