The Sisterhood of Support
By Martha Watson (O, University of Michigan)
I recently had the privilege and
pleasure of observing a ceremony during
the preference round of recruitment at
Kappa Nu (Carnegie Mellon University).
In that ceremony, the promise of having
the bond of sisterhood support us during
many of life's milestones was stressed,
and I realized how Alpha Chi Omega has
stood by me through many of those.
I joined the Theta (University of
Michigan) chapter in 1982 and enjoyed a
wonderful, festive bond with 120 sisters
until graduation in 1985. Many of those
friendships remain: some close, some
far, some frequent and others occasional.
Sisters stood up in and attended my
wedding, visited after my daughter was
born and attended her christening. Many
sisters provided encouragement and
networking support as I had to relaunch
my career after a layoff. My activities as
an alumna included serving on Theta
chapter's advisory board, encouraging

Leadership Academy is such a beneficial experience because it helps officers and advisors gain
a better understanding of their roles and prepares them to return to their chapters with new ideas
they feel empowered to implement. By having officers from every chapter together in one space,
it also allows collegiate members to see the magnitude of our organization, potentially for the first

also a great connection opportunity for officers and advisors alike." - Chloe Sekhran (, University

By Anne Stone Curosh (AB, Purdue University), Associate Director
of Advancement - Annual & Chapter Giving
Alpha Psi (UCLA)
The LPI program provides Alpha Chi Omega collegiate and
alumnae chapters the opportunity to support local nonprofits,
including local domestic violence awareness programs, while
also supporting the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. After
your chapter's philanthropy event, simply complete the LPI
form, and the money you raised will be allocated to benefit
the Foundation's Real. Strong. Women. Fund and your local
nonprofit. By using the LPI program, you're creating change in
your community while securing the future of Alpha Chi Omega
for generations to come!
Benefits of the LPI program:
Your chapter receives Alpha Chi Omega Foundation
giving recognition for the full amount of the funds
raised. This includes being recognized at convention,
as well as in Alpha Chi Omega publications and social
media.
Your chapter helps support your local nonprofit as well
as the work of the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation.

"The process was a lot easier than I had expected, and the online link was really straightforward!
| think it's important (to use the LPI program) because the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation is still
one of our philanthropies and, while our events are held mainly to raise money for local shelters
and to raise awareness for domestic violence, this is an easy way to make sure a portion of
the proceeds from the events can benefit the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, too. I think it's
awesome that you can use the LPI program no matter how much money you raise."
Mackenzie Spaulding, Zeta Sigma (Missouri State University) chapter VP philanthropy
"Our local philanthropic initiatives allow us to come together as a chapter and celebrate
sisterhood in a meaningful way that helps our community. Houston is also a deeply
philanthropic city, and our members are often looking for ways to get involved. Additionally, we
partner with our local collegiate chapters in our volunteer efforts, SO it is a great opportunity
for our general membership to interact with collegiate members in a way that they might not
otherwise be able to."
Dianna Patterson (AQ, University of Texas - Austin), Beta Zeta Beta (Houston, Texas) alumnae chapter
president
"For chapters that support more than one nonprofit organization, LPI lets you to take your
total donation and allocate a percentage to up to three different nonprofits. LPI is simple and
convenient, perfect for when things get busy as an executive board for your chapter."

So what is licensing and why is it a big deal? Licensing, or
what you may hear described as Greek licensing or officially

What can I do?
From a consumer standpoint, there are several ways you
can help protect Alpha Chi Omega's trademarks.
1) Look for the seal! Have you ever bought apparel for your
favorite sports team or your school? Did you notice the shiny

hologram decal. You can count on this seal as our thumbs up,
our visual vote of confidence that you've purchased quality
merchandise from a reputable company.
2) Look for the mark! When you check out a company's
website, look for the OLV seal to indicate it is approved to print
our merchandise. It's typically located at the bottom of the
home page or within the product description. When in doubt,
ask. It's the best way to protect yourself from buying unlicensed
merchandise that doesn't meet our quality standards.

Making a Difference
Before Their
Stories Are Lost
By Lauren Stark (AX, Butler University), Editor
It's a tale of bravery in the face of
terror. Of compassion winning over
hatred. Of women helping women.
In a German concentration camp,
prisoners from different nations and
religions banded together to save a
group of girls subjected to medical
experiments, hiding them for months
from the Nazis.
This the true story that Stacey
Fitzgerald (AY, University of
Alabama) is telling in her feature-
length documentary, Saving the
Rabbits of Ravensbrück.

reflecting that of their interviewees.
Fitzgerald says, "For us looking at
it, we would have been so angry and
bitter, not only about what we had
gone through, our friends murdered,
but also the crippling for life. But
when you meet these women, they're
SO light-hearted, and they love to
laugh. One of the first things they all
said was, 'Of course we forgave."
Fitzgerald recalls an interview
with one of the Rabbits, Stanislawa
"Stasia" Sledziejowska-Osiczko,
who explained that the women took
each day in the camp five minutes
at a time, believing that they could
survive for five more minutes, and
then five more after that. And they
wanted to fill each of those five-
minute periods with friendship and
joy instead of anger and hatred.
That's the lesson Fitzgerald
hopes people take away from her
documentary.
"The compassion we are capable
of was the strongest weapon against
the Nazis in the camp," she says.
"That's what the Nazis didn't count
on. They couldn't imagine that

as Susannah in The Marriage of Figaro and eventually
transitioning to musical theater.
While working on the musical Ambassador in the early
1970s, Dallas learned the producers wanted to stage the
show in London, so she traveled with the team across the
pond for backers auditions - performances to raise interest
and funds to secure a run of a show. Dallas sang 16 songs at
each audition, often completing five auditions a day.
It was at these auditions that the direction of Dallas'
career changed, though she didn't know it at the time.
After one audition, Dallas was greeted by Ray Cook, the
musical director for an upcoming production of Show Boat.
He raved about the show, Dallas wished him luck and she
carried on to her next audition. Later, Ian Bevan, head of
production for the acclaimed producer Harold Fielding, ran
the same approach, and still Dallas put the encounters out
of her mind.
After wrapping the backers auditions, Dallas took the
morning before her flight to explore London. She called her
agent to check in, knowing she had a performance in a few
days in Canada, but her agent told her urgently that Harold
Fielding, who was producing Show Boat, wanted to see her,
and the appointment was in 40 minutes!
"You don't miss an appointment with Mr. Fielding!"
Lorna laughs.
She raced to the hotel to grab her bag and then to the
theater, where she sang and read from the Show Boat script,
though not without telling the producers, "It has to be
quick because I have a plane to catch."
Six weeks later, Dallas was offered the starring role of
Magnolia in Show Boat, opposite Dame Cleo Laine. She
later learned that the production team wanted her to play
the role from the start but had to convince their home
office she was the only one for the job. After auditioning
800 other actresses for Magnolia, they were given the green
light to cast Dallas.
What was supposed to be a three-month run of Show
Boat turned into the musical's then-longest run of two years
and three months. Dallas starred in 894 performances.
It was during this time that Dallas fell in love with
London. She is now a dual citizen, keeping homes in both
London and New York City.
Since Show Boat, Dallas' career has been wide and
varied. She has played most major female roles in musical
theater, often in London's West End. She has twice
